Mountain sage, also called sacred sage or bee sage is a desert shrub native to the American Southwest and Mexico. The dried leaves have a sweet, slightly astringent aroma. These smudge sticks have also been lightly coated with dragon's blood which was once thought to be the blood of the dragons that had perished in combat.

Dragon's blood is really the hardened resin of certain rare trees found in India and Sumatra. It has a natural red pigment and a haunting, earthy fragrance. It is used to add potency to spells, for protections, and to create a meditative atmosphere. Native American's traditionally used sage in their medicine and shamanic practice. It's renowned for its healing and protective/cleansing properties. Sage smoke is believed to have the power to carry prayers to the heavens, to remove spirits, and cleanse ritual space.

How to burn a Smudge Stick: just light the tip, blow it out and either wave in air or place in a glass or other fireproof container (one that will not burn) with sand or salt placed therein to hold the smudge upright. If placing the stick in a bowl, you can use a feather to move the smoke around. Voice your intention as you move about the room or your home. For example, you can say, “By the powers of Earth, Air, Fire, Water I cleanse this space”. Remember to smudge in every corner, as negativity sometimes will gather there. To extinguish, invert smudge into the sand or salt to smother, and never under running water. To help your smudge stick last longer you can also break pieces off and place into a shell or other fire proof container and just burn them like that.

Caution: Never blow on the stick while smudging, as this could cause sparks to fly and cause a fire. Do not wear billowy, loose fitting clothing and keep windows closed while smudging. If gently waving your smudge stick room to room, always hold a fireproof container underneath.
